About PAWS Animal Welfare Society, Inc
The facts are shocking. In the United States, thousands upon thousands of puppies and kittens are born each day because of the uncontrolled breeding of pets. Stray and abandoned animals add thousands more offspring to the population. The result is a huge number of dogs and cats for whom there are no homes. In addition, many people obtain pets without first thinking carefully about the decision. When the animal gets too big, develops a behavior problem, or otherwise proves to be an unexpected challenge, the owner too often gives up on the animal. As a result, an estimated 4 to 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized in America's animal shelters each year because they are not wanted by anyone, anywhere.
In six short years, one female dog and her offspring can be the source of 67,000 puppies. In seven years, one mating feline pair and their young can produce 420,000 kittens. Is it any wonder why we have a problem?
PAWS is a non profit organization that hopes to rescue stray and unwanted cats and dogs. We are currently operating as a "shelter without walls", with many strays being fostered at volunteer foster homes or mini-shelters scattered throughout the valley. Future plans include but are not limited to, building an animal shelter for the St. John Valley region of Northern Maine and educating the public about the importance of pet sterilization. We strive to offer homeless pets a second chance by finding adoptive homes and offering a spay and neuter program to help control animal overpopulation. We are currently actively participating in a Trap, Neuter, Release / Return (TNR) program. To date, we have sterilized nearly 100 stray cats in the area!
PAWS will cover the St. John Valley area including: Fort Kent, St. John, St. Francis, Allagash, Soldier Pond, Wallagrass, Eagle Lake, Frenchville, St. Agatha, Madawaska, Van Buren and any other area in need. We welcome ANYONE who wishes to help us better the lives of unwanted cats and dogs.
